School Overview

School Identity and Context

On behalf of the students and staff of David Cameron, I wanted to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to our great school. We are located in Colwood, British Columbia and are part of the ��ѻ��ý. We are a K-5 school. At David Cameron we expect that our students SOAR. That means that we are Safe, we take Ownership for our actions, we are Accepting of others, and we are Respectful.

David Cameron Elementary enrolls approximately 422 students from kindergarten to Grade 5. David Cameron services the border area between Colwood and Langford with a mix of families from all socio-economic factors. In addition, our school includes a District Resource Program (DRP) for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students. This program adds to the unique environment that is our school.

This year, due to new catchment boundaries, we are losing approximately 140 of our David Cameron students to the new elementary school being built in West Hills. We are also gaining students from the Colwood and Ruth King catchment areas.

When analyzing the Student Learning Surveys over the past year, David Cameron Students stated:

96.4% stated that Adults Cared about them in the 2020-2021 school year. The district average for this statement in 2020-2021 is 62.1%.
90.9% stated that they Feel Safe at school in the 2020-2021 school year. The district average for this statement in 2020-2021 is 76.0%.
89.1% stated that they Feel Welcome at David Cameron in the 2020-2021 school year. The district average for this statement in 2020-2021 is 70.0%.
88.6% stated positive Overall Belonging in the 2020-2021 school year. The district average for this statement in 2020-2021 is 64.2%.
78.2% stated a positive School Belonging at David Cameron in the 2020-2021 school year. The district average for this statement in 2020-2021 is 48.6%.

We can see from these results that David Cameron Students are feeling more positive about their school experience than the average student in SD62.

We do not have the results of the SLS from the 2021-2022 school year yet, and it will be interesting to compare these results.

Outlining and communicating this belief so that all staff, students, and families understand it's meaning.
As a school, we wish to be speaking and communicating the same beliefs with all members of David Cameron, staff, students and families.
S.O.A.R. recognition at biweekly assemblies with all students.
Using the S.O.A.R. belief with students in our everyday language and conversations with them.
Using S.O.A.R. language when students are in the office speaking to the Principal or Vice Principal.
Putting together a S.O.A.R. graphic so that families may discuss this at home with children.
Communicating our beliefs to new and returning staff members through the creation of a David Cameron Handbook that has been created by teachers and administration at David Cameron.
Communicating and inviting PAC to be part of the conversation around S.O.A.R.
Presenting S.O.A.R. at a PAC meeting so that parents understand the beliefs that we are communicating to the David Cameron Community.

Indicators of progress connected to Goal 1

The sources of evidence being used to measure our progress toward goal 1 are:

Students are using the language of S.O.A.R. on the playground and throughout the school.
Staff use the language of S.O.A.R. in their communications with students and parents.
Pictures and names of students who S.O.A.R. are displayed on a bulletin board outside the main office for everyone to see.
A survey will be sent out to parents in September 2023 regarding the S.O.A.R. initiative. The survey results will be analyzed and reported out to staff, families and the PAC.
Feedback from staff regarding the S.O.A.R. initiative will be elicited at the Staff Planning Day on August 31, 2023. We will continue to check in with staff at monthly meetings about how they feel the S.O.A.R. program is going and if there are any changes or modifications that need to be made. The question will be: What is working well and how can we improve?

A David Cameron Staff and Parent Handbook, created collaboratively by teachers and PVP, will be distributed to staff and parents in August and September respectively.
